Scenario

Botium Toys is a fictional organization from a cybersecurity training scenario. I reviewed its audit scope, goals, and risk assessment, then evaluated its administrative, technical, and physical controls and compliance considerations.

02

Methodology

  1. ScopeReviewed audit scope, goals, and risk assessment
  2. ControlsEvaluated administrative, technical, and physical controls
  3. GapsIdentified threats, vulnerabilities, and security gaps
  4. ComplianceAssessed controls against compliance considerations
  5. ImpactEvaluated potential impact of each weakness
  6. PrioritizeRanked risks by impact
  7. RecommendWrote remediation recommendations

Findings & Recommendations

PriorityFindingRecommendation
CriticalLeast privilege / separation of duties not implementedRBAC and least privilege, periodic reviews
CriticalSensitive data not encryptedEncrypt at rest and in transit
HighNo adequate backups or DR planAutomated backups; tested DR plan
HighWeak password policy, no password managerStronger requirements, MFA, password manager
HighNo intrusion detection systemDeploy network/host IDS with review procedures
MediumNo legacy-system maintenance scheduleDocumented patch schedule; replace or isolate

Existing strengths: firewall, antivirus, physical locks, CCTV, fire detection.

What I Learned

  • Strong physical controls don't make up for missing access control and encryption.
  • Ranking findings by impact turns a long list of gaps into a clear plan.
  • Backups and a tested DR plan are security controls, not just IT tasks.
  • Without an IDS, attackers can operate unnoticed for longer.
